Did you see the 20/20 episode regarding La Weight Loss?

This episode originally aired on 2/16/07. One of 20/20s reporters Samantha Wender went undercover to three different LA Weight Loss Centers. The results were the same at each center.

On her first visit she was encouraged. She was told that the center could help her to lose weight. She was asked to fill out a personal questionnaire regarding her weight struggles.

At subsequent visits the so called counselors used Samantha’s emotional issues to convince her to purchase LA Weight Loss supplements, weight loss bars, shakes, vitamins etc.

A former customer that was featured in the story wound up spending over $4,000. and lost about 10 pounds.

Former employees of LA Weight Loss stated that they were taught in training ‘If they cry, they buy.”. They stated that they were not trained to have sympathy for people and were not trained to help people lose weight. LA Weight Loss denies this.

LA Weight Loss also pushes a credit card called Care Credit to help customers purchase their products. However this card comes with a steep 22% interest rate.

LA Weight Loss has had hundreds of complaints of deceptive advertising … bait & switch. Advertisements state you can lose weight for $7.00 a week, yet many people were asked to spend $400. up to join for 6 months or more.

LA Weight Loss claims that their professional counselors are the most important part of the program. However of eight counselors that Samantha met, only one had any medical background.

In response to ABC News inquiries LA Weight Loss wrote a letter to ABC. They admitted that there is no educational requirement for counselors and some had not even graduated from high school.

It’s interesting to note that LA Weight Loss isn’t even based in California. The corporate office is in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
