SlimKids Weight Loss Plan

SlimKids weight loss plan was conceived in 1995 by an overweight teenager. This program follows the USDA guidelines and the caloric intake ranges from 1500 to 1800 calories per day.

What makes this diet plan unique is that it allows 64 grams of fat per day. That means that a kid can eat a hamburger, hotdog, or baked fries that they desire so much. It is a ten week program and affords kids from eight and up to lose one to one and a half pounds per week.

Youth obesity is a pandemic in our society. It is affecting younger children and teens more than ever before. In fact, doctors who are solely researching the reasons behind child obesity have found that it may involve the hypothalamus gland, which controls eating habits.

One is immediately struck by the comprehensive information given when perusing the SlimKids weight loss plan. There are testimonials, diet tips, and information about its author. The site also promotes changes in kids’ lifestyles including exercise, portion control, and making healthy choices by getting rid of bad habits.

What stands out most about this program is that it allows obese teens and children to continue eating the foods they love. However it also gives parents the tools to introduce healthier choices leading to their kids having healthier lives.

Here is a sample of one day’s menu from the SlimKids site:

Breakfast: 1 large egg scrambled or fried (use a pan sprayed with oil spray), 1 slice whole-wheat toast with 1 teaspoon butter or reduced calorie or margarine, 1/2 grapefruit, and 1 cup skim or 1% milk.

Lunch: 1 chicken salad sandwich made with 3 ounces cooked chicken breast, celery, lettuce, 1 teaspoon mayonnaise, pita bread (or 2 slices whole-wheat or white bread), 1 apple (or other whole fruit), 1 cup mini fresh carrots (or large carrot cut up) with 2 teaspoons of non-fat dip on the side for dipping, and 1 juice pack drink.

For dinner: 3 ounces lean roast beef, broiled (or other lean protein source), 1/2 cup mushrooms (fresh or canned) served hot over beef, 2 cups tossed salad with 2 tablespoons reduced calorie salad dressing, 1 cup cooked broccoli, 1 cup skim or 1% milk.

Snacks would consist of: 2 cups popped light popcorn, 1 chocolate milkshake (recipe included in the program).

The approximate totals for the day would amount to: three milks, four breads, three fruits, two servings of protein, four vegetables, and three fats. In addition, you can substitute any of the foods on the menu with the same food types given in the program.

If you think the SlimKids weight loss program would be beneficial to your child, you can read more about it on their site.

Can You Eat More and Lose Weight?

I was up late last night working on my computer and sort of listening to the TV.  It was sort of funny there were 3 weight loss infomercials back-to-back all making the same claim …

“Eat More Weigh Less”

Thi infomercials were for the Six Week Body Makeover, Food Lovers Fat Loss System and The Skinny Switch.  It really struck me as funny when they all were saying you can eat anything you want and still lose weight.

The infomercials don’t tell the whole story ….

When reviewing the diets listed above we found that they are all combination diets.  They claim certain foods eaten together boost your metabolism.  There is NO scientific proof behind this theory. They also allow 1 or 2 days a week for you to eat whatever you want.

Their marketing ploys work because everyone wants that “Magic Diet” or “Magic Pill” that will let them eat anything in any quantity all of the time and still maintain a model figure.  Isn’t it time to WAKE UP and face reality?

The truth is that any nutrionally sound, healthy diet lets you accomplish the same outcome “EAT MORE and Lose Weight”

It’s a proven fact that eating revs up your metabolism.  Eat frequent small healthy meals and you will lose weight.  Healthy food has less calories than junk food – thus it allows you to eat more than you currently do and still lose weight.

Healthy diets offer a variety of food in any combination you desire.  Healthy diets also allow for built in “cheat days”.

3 Lessons from ‘The Biggest Loser’

Biggest Loser Diet Club – Sign Up Now
All over the world, millions of people are riveted to their TV’s – but not to watch Sex in the City, or Jay Leno. Not to see the latest soap, or CSI. Not to see who outlasts, outplays, or outwits everyone else on Survivor or Idol.

No, they are spellbound by the efforts of a small group of obese people trying to overcome the effects of years of overeating.

Obesity is the new epidemic. Therefore, it’s not surprising that for so many viewers, this is compulsive to watch. Overweight children sulk around school yards while their fat mothers fill shopping carts with all of the wrong products and foods.

Then, they sit down at night and watch The Biggest Loser. They see new body shapes emerge along with dramatic weight loss. They want to feel these same results, and they begin to think it just might be possible.

  • Who can afford a personal trainer several times a week?
  • Who has four or five hours a day to dedicate to working out?
  • Who had the luxury of having their own personal advisor on smart food choices and calorie content?

Not very many people at all. You have to remember that this is television; therefore it is a false situation.

“This is a GAME. You have to make the most of your time here, because it is going to be MUCH harder out in the real world,” the players keep reminding themselves and the viewers of this. However You can join NBC’s Biggest Loser Diet Club Same diet & fitness program used on TV – personalized to your goals!

It most likely IS harder in the “real world”. However, you can take lessons from watching this reality show. The contestants can make it work for them, and you can make it work for you as well.

Put these three practical and useful lessons to use immediately:

1. You have to put weight loss first.

In the Biggest Loser household, weight loss comes FIRST. So, make it come first in YOUR household as well. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Well, IT IS. It’s so simple, in fact, that many people easily overlook it. They try to fit meal planning, and exercise around everything else in their lives, instead of making it a priority and making everything else fit in around it.

You need to think about what is more important-getting the weight off and becoming fit enough to add years onto your life, or watching another TV show? Allot at least one hour a day to sit down with a pen and paper and plan your meals, record what you eat, and do some sort of exercise. Guess what? That leaves about 23 hours left to do everything else!

2. E is for Exercise-and Enjoy!

What else have you noticed in the Biggest Loser household? The more they exercise, the more they seem to enjoy it and thrive on it! Of course they complain, they sweat, they grunt and they groan. But, as time goes on, they say things like, “I never thought I’d look forward to working out-but now I don’t feel right if a day goes by that I don’t exercise!”

Find what’s right for YOU, and you have found the secret to ENJOYING exercise. Look for other forms of exercise if you don’t enjoy going to the gym. You need to find a good combination of cardio and resistance training, but that doesn’t have to be done on machines.
You can dance, swim, walk, climb hills, push a wheelbarrow around your garden…and the choices are endless so choose something that can be FUN for you. Research what happens to your heart and various muscle groups when you exercise, and remember to pick activities that you will ENJOY.

3. Identify the Triggers.

When the contestants have to face their demons, emotions run high. Weight gain is hardly ever solely physical. You’ll soon see a pattern of emotional eating if you keep a good diary and faithfully record not only what you eat, but when (and why). What are YOUR triggers? Family arguments? Boredom? Exhaustion?

You can start working on strategies to defeat these triggers once you have successfully identified them. Something as simple as challenging yourself every time you want food can help you overcome these triggers.

  • Ask yourself “am I hungry-yes or no?
  • If I’m not hungry, WHY do I want to eat?
  • Am I really just thirsty?
  • Am I running to the fridge just because I am upset?
  • Is there something else I can do to feel better?
  • Is there a long-term solution that will fix this-forever?”

If you aren’t ready to deal with the root cause of your “emotional” eating, then be prepared with food that won’t add to your problems with the resulting rolls of fat by having “good” foods at hand. Just make sure that you LIKE the “good” foods you keep around so you will be more likely to choose them.

These are just three of the simple, but life changing lessons that anyone can take from watching The Biggest Loser. Plus, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it all by yourself.

Vegan vs. Vegetarian

What’s the Difference?

Vegetarianism has been practiced for many centuries. Some choose a vegetarian diet for religious beliefs or ethical reasons; others simply believe it is a healthier way to live.

Vegetarianism does not cause any health problems – as long as one includes all of the necessary vitamins and minerals in their vegetarian diet.

Many people believe that the words “Vegetarian” and “Vegan” mean the same thing.  They don’t.

Vegans eat a specific type of diet and often try to avoid any animal products in their lives altogether.

Vegetarian is a broader term that encompasses several different diets.

Vegans do not eat any type of animal flesh.   They do not consume any animal products, such as eggs or milk. Most vegans do not even use or eat honey. Some do not even eat yeast products.

Vegan lifestyle characteristics include not wearing any type of animal product, including silk or wool.  They will not use any products including makeup or lotions that contain ingredients which originate from animals.

Vegan societies set these requirements. Individuals may or may not follow them completely. The principle is to avoid using or consuming anything that could harm any type of animal. People whom adhere to a strict vegan diet but are not so concerned with non-food uses of animal products are called dietary vegans.

How to Avoid Animal Ingredients teaches you about the Vegan lifestyle, how to find true vegan products by identifying hidden animal ingredients on food labels and in restaurants.

 Vegetarian Diets:

Lacto Vegetarians have the same dietary principles as vegans – except they consume milk products.

Ovo-Lacto vegetarians are the same as lacto vegetarians – except they also consume eggs and egg products.

Both groups may or may not avoid the use of non-food animal products.

Pesectarians consume something similar to a vegetarian diet, although they do eat fish.

Fruitarians eat a vegan diet, but they also avoid eating foods that kill the plant when harvested.

What’s the best vegetarian diet?

Well that depends on your individual beliefs and motives for being a vegetarian.

  • Those who are vegetarians because they want to avoid supporting factory farming techniques often become pesectarians.
  • People who want to combat animal cruelty often opt for a vegan diet.
  • Those who want to avoid the health risks of consuming meat may become lacto or ovo-lacto vegetarians.

Some people claim that a raw vegan diet, in which vegan foods are not cooked above 115 degrees Fahrenheit, is the healthiest diet for humans. There is some debate around the subject, but either way it is possible to eat a raw vegan diet and still consume all of the nutrients we need to survive.

Kristen’s Raw tells you the details and benefits of a Raw Diet, How to get started and Tons of Raw Recipes.

Veganism is simply a subcategory of vegetarianism. Due to the very strict requirements of their diets, they are also called strict vegetarians. The basic difference is that vegetarians may or may not eat foods that are forbidden by the vegan diet.

Whatever type of diet you decide to consume, just make sure you are getting all of the nutrients and vitamins your body requires!  Vegetarian Cooking offers mouthwatering delicious vegetarian recipes and a step by step guide to a vegetarian lifestyle.

Also, note that just because you are a vegetarian doesn’t mean you won’t have a weight problem. If you are trying to lose weight with a vegetarian diet you’ll find Healthy Vegetarian menus at eDiets.com.

Should You Use an Exchange Diet?

Exchange Diets

What is an exchange diet?

An exchange diet is where you are given a daily limit of servings from each food group.

Fruits, starches, meat, dairy, fats, etc. are categorized into groups.  They each have food that is equal in nutritional values and calories.

You’ll become familiar with the interchangeable foods in no time!

Eating out, or away from home won’t pose a problem either.

Why should you choose an exchange diet?

Dieticians recommend exchange diets more than any other. It also gives you more of a variety than fixed menu diets, which can make it easier to stay on course.

You won’t be eating the same foods every single day when you follow an exchange diet. This will keep your food from becoming bland and boring.

The most important thing for you to know is serving sizes. Just like any other diet or plan, this will keep you from over eating without even realizing it.

For example, 1 slice of bread is one serving of carbs. You can substitute this with one serving of:

  •  Rice- 1/3 cup
  • Oatmeal- ½ cup
  • Hot dog bun- ½

If you think one hamburger bun is one serving, you could be consuming more than you though which could lead to weight gain.

An exchange diet can benefit anyone with increased energy, better overall health, and of course weight loss.

You will learn the skills necessary to lose unwanted pounds and maintain a healthy weight by following an exchange diet.

Popular Exchange Diets:

Mayo Clinic doctors Donald Hensrud, M.D. and Jennifer Nelson PhD designed  the Healthy Weight Pyramid which is the ONLY weight loss plan the Mayo Clinic endorses.  It is safe, simple and easy to follow.

Bill Phillips Eating for Life Plan at eDiets - You will want to join the forums and attend online meetings for support and motivation. Using the tools that eDiets offer make this plan easy to follow.

For those with diabetes, the diabetic exchange plan works the same way. Each exchange food also has the same affect on your blood sugar as the other foods within that group.

Healthy menus for Diabetes at eDiets.com  – You’ll get a nutritionally balanced plan which helps control your blood sugar levels and cravings for sweets. This plan will help improve your overall health.

Both Richard Simmons Deal a Meal cards and the original Weight Watchers®plan were based on exchange diets.

Jennifer Polimino, a fitness expert from Colorado, developed it. She cracked the code on how to get back down to your pre-pregnancy weight in as few as 37 days! She’s even posted her personal “before and after” pictures for you to see.

First, this program deals with many of the fears and concerns that most women have when they become pregnant.

When a woman becomes pregnant there are a vast amount of emotions they go through. There is joy and then there is fear.

This program can help walk you through and give you information about those fears. With the help given by this program you will learn how to conquer those fears and have a happy healthy pregnancy, birth and life thereafter.

Second, this program will help you lose the weight you have gained while pregnant.

Women of all ages fear packing on pounds, losing their figure… and… becoming unattractive.

Most women in their 30s and 40s who are now out of shape say that everything changed… when they had kids.

In other words, getting pregnant was the beginning of the end for their bodies. They’ve struggled with weight ever since.

Fortunately, you can look good after pregnancy. In fact, you can look great… once you know the secrets. Slim Mom Secrets will show you how to Get Back to Your Pre-Pregnancy Shape… 37 Days After Having a Baby.

My Story, When I became pregnant one of the biggest fears I had was whether I would have a healthy baby. There are no guarantees.

All of this and more were set out plain and simple for me to read and understand.

I also learned how to help that dreaded morning sickness I seemed to have all day long. It helped me with ways to deal with heartburn, leg cramps, sleeplessness, night sweats and even my back pain.

Most of the questions like these I had were answered for me in this program.

Then came the problems I had with my own looks. Not just the weight I might gain but the acne, the large veins in my legs, my sagging breasts and all those stretch marks. Slim Mom Secrets showed me ways to prevent these types of problems.

I lost my pregnancy weight and my looks returned to the way they were before I became pregnant once I delivered.

If you are pregnant or even if you’re thinking you might like to have a child I highly recommend that you grab your copy of Slim Mom Secrets. The benefits you learn will help subside your fears and make your pregnancy, birth, and after a happy memory that will last a lifetime.

Are Your Loved Ones Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts?

manchoice.jpg Sometimes our loved ones can hinder our weight loss goals. Often times their intention is not to hinder us.

For example: I love donuts. There was a time in my life when I simply could not say “no” to them. I would wind up binging on them – I could eat 4 to 6 donuts with no problem at all.

I began a weight loss program. I was following my plan to the tee. Then on Saturday morning, my husband brought home some donuts:

“Here honey, I thought you’d enjoy these.” I continued to devour every last crumb. My husbands intention was not to make me go off plan. He wasn’t even thinking that I was trying to lose weight. He simply wanted to do something nice for me. Your loved ones could be hindering you by tempting you with seconds, cooking your favorite foods, or buying your favorite ice-cream.

  1. Identify your loved ones behavior that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
  2. Identify your loved ones reasons for that behavior.
    1. Are they trying to do something nice for you?
    2. Do they feel appreciated when you eat their cooking?
    3. Are they bringing in the ice cream for themselves, not realizing that is making you lose track of your goals?
  3. Tell your loved one what you need from him/her.

You need to be assertive. Tell them exactly what you need from him/her and why. I told my husband … “I really appreciate the fact that you love me so much, that you brought donuts home. However as I can’t seem to say “no” to them, I would appreciate it even more if you could restrain from bringing them home. A hug from you lets me know how much you care and appreciate me.” I told him in exactly what I needed and why. I showed him I appreciated his gesture, and gave him an alternative action so that his needs would be met as well. If you are a little apprehensive about approaching your loved one, ask yourself why. It’s probably one of two reasons:

  1. You like having someone to blame for your failures. It’s easy to say “I keep blowing it because my wife is such a good cook and demands I eat seconds.” Or “My husband is so nice to me he keeps buying me doughnuts, if I tell him to stop, he may never buy me anything again.” If this is you, you need to decide how important reaching your goal really is. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others.
  2. You don’t know how to approach them or you don’t want to hurt their feelings. If this is the case then you need to practice … in front of the mirror, to a friend, or even to the dog. Picture yourself telling your loved one exactly what you need from him/her to help you achieve your goals.

Remember, more than anything else, your loved ones want YOU to be HAPPY and HEALTHY, and will do anything in their power to help you achieve your goals.

Slim Fast Diet: Pros and Cons

The Slim Fast diet is one wherein you add powder to a glass of skim milk and drink it in place of two meals each day.Is this a diet for you?

Let’s take a look at the Pros and Cons of Slim Fast:

When Slim Fast first came on the scene, it had three varieties of shakes: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.  The diet consisted of substituting these shakes for breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner, while at the same time adding 600 calories to the one meal you would actually consume that day.

Subsequently, the Slim Fast product line has grown to include instant shakes, soups and snack bars, which you can consume up to three times a day.  Moreover, it is a requirement that you drink eight glasses of water a day while on this diet.

Having explained the Slim Fast diet thus far, here are the pros and cons.

Firstly, it is definitely an easy diet to follow.  The shakes can be taken to work or in a cooler, allowing you to drink them anywhere, anytime.

Secondly, it does not involve counting calories or attending meetings.

Thirdly, one does achieve significant weight loss in combination with an exercise program.

Here are the cons:

Firstly, starting the Slim Fast diet is difficult as you do feel the need to eat real food.

Secondly, the lack of fruits and vegetables affects Slim Fast users, who tend to ignore these vital nutrients and vitamins.

Thirdly, this particular diet is hard to maintain.

Finally, those who achieve their goal often gain back all the weight lost, and then some.

It’s for this reason that Honest Diet Reviews recommends the Slim Fast Optima Diet at eDiets. You’ll get personal support, and a maintaince program to follow once you’ve reached your goal.

One could conclude that although there is weight loss derived from this diet, it is more reasonable to utilize this diet as a snack alternative.  While the product itself is quite good in taste, it lacks the texture one finds enjoyable when eating real food.

I have a friend who lwho lost 60 pounds in one year using Slim Fast in combination with an exercise program three times a week.  However, she gained back most of the weight the following year.

The problem with the Slim Fast diet is that unlike conventional diets, there is no maintenance afterwards.  Sure, you can drink a shake now and then, but it does not replace the need to have conventional foods.

The Slim Fast diet is more suited to those who are not obese or need to lose large amounts of weight.  Experts recommend that losing two pounds per week on a more conventional food diet is preferable.

While there are so many weight loss diets available today, choosing the right one for you is as essential as losing the pounds.  The Slim Fast diet and other diet fads may work in the short run.  For lasting results you may want to try Healthy Diet Plans that are available today.
