Dr. Phil Calls Bistro MD To Help In “Extreme Weight” Case
With a case of extreme obesity slowly killing a man, Dr. Phil has called upon Bistro MD and Dr. Caroline Cederquist M.D., the developer of the diet with hopes that her expertise and her medical delivery diet can offer critical help to the situation.
On the show, which air yesterday, January 29, 2008 Dr. Phil employs his popular team approach, and he’ll have input from his usual posse of medical experts for Kevin, who at age 44 has reached the stunning weight of 715 pounds. But faced with a weight problem that extreme, not just any doctor has the depth of experience to offer meaningful help.
So Dr. Phil called in BistroMD and Dr. Cederquist, a board-certified family and bariatric physician who has at the core of her treatment a focus not on extreme diets or radical regimens, but on addressing the metabolic irregularities that develop in overweight people from a few pounds overweight to hundreds of pounds.
“Kevin is disabled and virtually homebound,” says Dr. Cederquist. “He has gained 300 pounds in the past five years. He suffers from diabetes and severe sleep and breathing difficulties. Problems with his joints and his sheer mass make it almost impossible for him to move around, and as a result, he scarcely leaves his bed, let alone his house. Getting him from home to the Dr. Phil studios was a major undertaking.”
Dr. Cederquist said Kevin had been rejected for weight-loss surgeries because the medical conditions related to his obesity make him too high-risk as a candidate for surgery. He has sunk into a depression over his worsening situation, and resorts to eating for comfort, further worsening his conditions-and his despair.
“These are often people who have been successful at everything else in their lives, and they cannot understand why their efforts to lose even 20 pounds are so futile,” she says. “But for them, it’s just not as simple as eat less, burn more. Losing weight is not just about eating less of the wrong things; it is about eating more of the right things.”
Because Kevin’s high-risk status prevents him from pursuing bariatric surgery, Dr. Phil’s staff assessed a number of options for Kevin, and ultimately, Dr. Phil asked Dr. Cederquist to help with Kevin’s case. She had developed a home diet delivery program that specifically addresses both the practical and metabolic problems most people as well as Kevin must overcome. The home delivery diet, called BistroMD, is a home-delivered diet that Dr. Cederquist developed..
The gourmet foods in the BistroMD diet will help Kevin deal with both the practical and the medical challenges he faces. The meals are portion-controlled and designed to preserve lean muscle tissue as the dieter loses body fat. Because they are low in glycemic load, the foods also tend to reduce the sugar and carb cravings that lead so many to abandon their dieting attempts.
While Kevin is an extreme example, his metabolic abnormalities are common and are becoming more so. Currently 70.8% of men and 66.2% of women in the U.S. are overweight. The vast majority of overweight people develop metabolic abnormalities as they gain. But with the right nutritional program is the underlying principle of the Bistro MD diet. The macronutrients of the diet include adequate lean protein spread throughout the day, controlled portions of complex carbohydrates and the right amount of “good” fats.
About BistroMD:

Today BistroMD meals are prepared using cutting-edge food preparation technology to assure an optimal balance of preparation convenience, correct nutrient content, and peak dining enjoyment. You should also look for programs that offer support. Remember online support is just as effective as seeing someone in person. Sometimes it may be better, because you can remain anonymous.
Remember just because you may be seeing someone in person – it doesn’t mean that they have any counseling or nutrition credentials.

LA Weight Loss
Did you see the 20/20 episode regarding La Weight Loss?
This episode originally aired on 2/16/07. One of 20/20s reporters Samantha Wender went undercover to three different LA Weight Loss Centers. The results were the same at each center.
On her first visit she was encouraged. She was told that the center could help her to lose weight. She was asked to fill out a personal questionnaire regarding her weight struggles.
At subsequent visits the so called counselors used Samantha’s emotional issues to convince her to purchase LA Weight Loss supplements, weight loss bars, shakes, vitamins etc.
A former customer that was featured in the story wound up spending over $4,000. and lost about 10 pounds.
Former employees of LA Weight Loss stated that they were taught in training ‘If they cry, they buy.”. They stated that they were not trained to have sympathy for people and were not trained to help people lose weight. LA Weight Loss denies this.
LA Weight Loss also pushes a credit card called Care Credit to help customers purchase their products. However this card comes with a steep 22% interest rate.
LA Weight Loss has had hundreds of complaints of deceptive advertising … bait & switch. Advertisements state you can lose weight for $7.00 a week, yet many people were asked to spend $400. up to join for 6 months or more.
LA Weight Loss claims that their professional counselors are the most important part of the program. However of eight counselors that Samantha met, only one had any medical background.
In response to ABC News inquiries LA Weight Loss wrote a letter to ABC. They admitted that there is no educational requirement for counselors and some had not even graduated from high school.
It’s interesting to note that LA Weight Loss isn’t even based in California. The corporate office is in Horsham, Pennsylvania.

You need to be willing to follow the diet plan. Be warned that not all popular diets are successful. You need to find a program that incorporates changes for long-term healthy lifestyle behaviors.
Some of the popular iets offer rapid weight loss. You need to be careful that you are not losing weight too fast. Some of the diets have lists of “good food” and “bad food”. Some limit or restrict complete food groups.
Many popular diets are low-carbohydrate. There is a lack of scientific evidence for or against these diets. This controversy has raged for decades. Many people have successfully lost weight and kept it off with this approach. Others have not been able to stay on such a strict regimen.
Popular diets usually fall under one of the following categories:
- A fixed menu diet that lists foods you can and cannot eat.
- Exchange diet. You are allowed a certain amount of servings from each food group per day.
- Combination diet. Eating a certain combination of foods at various times of the day to increase your metabolism.
- Questionable diet. Restricts or strictly limits entire food groups.

Diet and Fitness
Diet and Fitness plans have the best success for long-term results if they are combined with behavior changes. Eat a sensible healthy diet and exercise.
Exercise builds muscle enabling you to lose weight faster. Muscle also allows you to eat more on your maintenance plan.
Are you serious about losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life?
Fitness plans do not have to be long and tedious. Most experts agree that walking 30 minutes per day will do the trick.
You may also want to add strength training and toning to your fitness plan. Strength training works off of your muscles. This doesn’t mean you have to go to they gym. Cleaning your house, sweeping, mopping, washing windows, walking your dog etc is all considered a good workout.
It is important that you eat when you are undertaking a fitness plan. Too few calories and fad diets do not provide you with the strength and energy required for exercise.
By following a sensible diet and fitness plan you will find that you have increased energy. Exercise reduces stress and helps you have a positive mental attitude.
It’s important that you drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day to keep you hydrated. A good diet and fitness program decreases health risks.

Meal Replacement Diets
Liquid diets are known as meal replacement diets or formula diets. If you are looking for rapid weight loss with just a little effort then a meal replacement diet may be right for you.
While following a this plan you will generally eat one balanced meal per day. The other two meals and snacks consist of a liquid formula drink or a meal replacement bar.
On most plans you are also encouraged to eat fruits as some of your snacks.
Benefits of Meal Replacement Diets
There’s not much planning involved. There’s no calorie counting or measuring portions. Meal replacement liquid diets are an easy “no brainer” way to lose weight.
A drawback is that it’s hard to learn portion control to maintain your weight loss. It’s not reasonable to think that you can follow meal replacement diets for life.
While following meal replacement diets you may want to sign up for an online program for support and encouragement. Once you’ve lost your weight an online program will be able to help you transition into maintenance and teach you the required skills needed to keep the weight off.
Most meal replacement diets give you a choice of purchasing the formula in a ready made drink form, a powder that you’ll mix with a liquid, meal replacement bars and snack bars.
Meal replacement diets are often compared to prepackaged diets. They are different.
Meal replacement diets consist of bars and shakes that are eaten in place of a meal.
Prepackaged Diets offer complete meals and snacks that have been prepackaged for you.
A diet that consists 100% of liquids should only be undertaken under the direction and close supervision of a physician.

How Many Carbs Do I Need?
So what is the percentage in terms of grams of carbs per day?
Depending on your total caloric intake you will consume some where between 200 to 300 grams of carbohydrates per day to eat the recommended 50% carbs.
Some low carb diets reduce carbs to 20 grams per day! This is about 2 slices of bread, a cup of fresh blueberries, or a half cup of cooked spaghetti.
Some low carb diets forbid bad carbs such as white flour, white bread and white sugar.
Low carb / high protein / high fat diets are based on the unproven theory that carbohydrates make people gain weight. It has been proven that eating too many calories is the basis for weight gain.
A diet high in protein and saturated fats could lead to heart disease, diabetes, gout and other health conditions. Low carb diets have been very controversial for the past 30 years.
Many experts believe that the weight lost on low carb diets is because the food restriction results in a reduction of calories.
People have been known to gain weight while following a low carb diet. This is due to the high fat content in a lot of high protein foods. So if you decide to go low carb, you’ll also want to watch your fat content.
It’s interesting to note that the first known diet book is a low carb diet. Written in 1864 “Letter on Corpulence” is William Banting’s strategy for losing weight.
If your body does not get enough carbs your body induces an unnatural state called ketosis. Supporters of low carb diets claim that your body burns more fat while in ketosis. This point remains controversial. Opponents argue that being in ketosis for more than a few weeks can cause serious complications.
According to Wickipedia …
“Ketosis (key-toe-sis) is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen and switches to a fasting mode such as occurs during sleep, during dieting, and during the body’s response to starvation. Energy from fat is mobilized to the liver and used to synthesize glucose (a process called gluconeogenesis) from lactic acid, glucogenic amino acids, and glycerol carbon substrates.”

Do Low Carb Diets Work?
The popularity of Low Carb diets has not lost their appeal in the past 20 or so years. People like the idea of being able to eat all they want – even if it means restricting certain foods.
While following a low carb weight loss program you are allowed to eat as much protein as you want. Some will limit your fat intake while others do not. Carbohydrate intake is reduced and sometimes strictly limited.
The main draw of low carb diets is the rapid weight loss you experience. Most of the initial weight loss is due to water loss. Nearly everyone quickly regain lost weight once they begin eating carbs again.
Carbohydrates supply the main energy sources for your body to function. Carbs are one of the three main nutrients found in food.
High carbohydrate foods are the main source of fiber in our diets. Carbs are found in fruits, vegetables, dried peas, beans, corn, cereal, pasta, rice and whole grain breads.
The term “Low Carb Diets” is very broad. A low carb diet is one which reduces carbohydrate to less than 50% of total daily caloric intake.
- USDA recommends 50% carbs
- Moderate carb – 40% to 50%
- Low Carb – 25% to 39%
- Very Low Carb – less than 25%

Effective Weight Loss – Your Activity
For effective weight loss you need to increase your activity. This doesn’t mean you have to work out at the gym for an hour a day.
It’s just learning to be more active like we were in the days gone by.
Almost all people who have successfully lost weight state they increased their activity level.
Some simple ways to increase your activity are …
- Play sports or games like tag, hopscotch, jump rope with your kids or grandkids
- Park as far away as you can from your destination and walk the rest of the way
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Take a walk or put things away during commercial breaks
- Take a walk during your breaks
- Walk if you are going somewhere within a mile of your home
- Hand wash your car
If you’re looking for effective weight loss with permanent results you will want to participate in both cardio and muscle building activities.
Cardiovascular exercise … Find an activity you enjoy and do it often. Experts agree that we should do these activities a minimum of thirty minutes, three to five times a week. Cardio exercise burns body fat – both during and after your workout.
Some Suggestions:
- Playing sports, basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis etc.
- Join a class that teaches you to dance, or just go dancing
- Do aerobics either at a class or following a video
- Buy a stair-climber or stationary bike, and exercise while watching your favorite TV show
- Go for a bicycle ride with your kids
- Take a walk – or take up jogging
There’s nothing quite as invigorating as walking or bicycling in the fresh air.
Strength building … This is simply building muscle. You achieve this by any exercise that uses resistance or by weight training.
Benefits of Exercise
- Builds muscle – which increases your metabolism
- After you stop exercising your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate
- Helps you to maintain your weight loss
- Improves your overall mental and physical health
- Reduces stress, anxiety and depression
- Improves self-esteem
- Reduces your risk for heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and diabetes
Begin increasing your activity level slowly. What you want to do is challenge yourself to go just a little more than what is comfortable. As you build your strength and endurance you’ll begin to gain more confidence and motivation to continue.
When you begin an exercise regimen it is normal to feel a little sore the next day. Contrary to popular belief the saying “no pain, no gain” is not necessarily true. Too much, too soon can cause harm. If you start feeling pain, you’re doing too much too soon. And you need to stop and see a doctor. Listen to what your body is telling you.
You are now ready to begin your journey to effective weight loss.
